I’m thrilled to announce, in what appears to be a business casual way, that I’m Directing & Music Directing Beautiful: The Carole King Musical in the McCreary Theatre at The Green Room. Auditions are in June. The show opens the season in September.

Before she was hit-maker Carole King — she was Carole Klein, a spunky, young songwriter from Brooklyn with a unique voice. From the chart-topping hits she wrote for the biggest acts in music to her own life-changing, trailblazing success with Tapestry, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical takes you back to where it all began — and takes you on the ride of a lifetime.

AUDITIONS
Auditions for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical will be held at The Green Room on Sunday, June 11 from 7 pm & Monday, June 12 from 7 pm, with possible callbacks on Tuesday, June 13 from 7 pm. Please note that not every character will require a callback. Not receiving a callback does not necessarily mean you will not be cast, nor does receiving a callback guarantee you will be cast.
We intend to offer roles by Thursday, June 15 ahead of Father’s Day weekend. If you are not called, you were not cast.
Auditions will include singing and dancing. Please dress comfortably for your dance audition.
Please prepare 32 bars; preferably from (but not limited to) Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.
An accompanist will be provided. Do not bring your own accompanist. Please do not accompany yourself. Please bring any sheet music not listed above with you. *The actors only simulate playing instruments, so no demonstration of that sort of skill is necessary.

The Shirelles as a historical mashup of The Chiffons, The Crystals, and The Cookies. An African American female singing group comprising four members. The Shirelles sang many of Carole’s and Gerry’s early hits. The Shirelles formed in Passaic, New Jersey in 1957. They consisted of schoolmates Shirley Owens, Doris Coley, Addie “Micki” Harris, and Beverly Lee.
*The Chiffons had three members and sang One Fine Day. They consisted of Judy Craig, Patricia Bennett, and Barbara Lee. *The Crystals had five members and sang Uptown. They consisted of Barbara Alston, Mary Thomas, Dolores “Dee Dee” Kenniebrew, Myrna Giraud, and Patricia “Patsy” Wright. *The Cookies originally consisted of Dorothy Jones, Darlene McCrea, and Beulah Robertson and sang backup for Little Eva on Locomotion. Earl-Jean Reavis (McCrea) and Margaret Ross replaced Darlene and Beulah.
“Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” written by husband-wife songwriting team Gerry Goffin and Carole King; the song went on to become the first Billboard number-one hit by an African-American girl group, possibly the first by any girl group. They have been credited with launching the girl group genre, with much of their music reflecting the genre’s essence. Their acceptance by both white and black audiences, predating that of the Motown acts, has been noted as reflecting the early success of the Civil Rights Movement. They have received numerous honors, including the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation, as well as being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and named one of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time by Rolling Stone in 2004.

Hi, Peeps! Just a quick heads up before the holidays that I’m Directing & Music Directing Last Stop on Market Street in the McCreary Theatre at The Green Room. Auditions are in January. The show goes up in March.
This is a unique opportunity to sing & rap; to perform Hip-Hop, R&B & Jazz in a musical similar in style to In the Heights.
It’s a six-person, ensemble cast; four of which play 17 different characters combined!
This new musical is based on the best-selling book by Matt de la Pena / Illustrated by Christian Robinson.
It’s The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air situation in reverse! Six-year-old CJ is (reluctantly) staying with his (extremely over-the-top) Nana, in a world considerably different from the one he’s used to (his phone and tablet). The disagreeable (and let’s just admit it, whiny) child is dragged on a bus ride that’s loud and gritty, and weird. Guided by his veritable force-of-nature Nana, CJ travels a little closer to his roots and sees that things are not always what they seem. This is one hip-hop, eclectic, heart-thumpin’, toe-tappin’ joy ride.
It was adapted for the stage by Cheryl West with Music & Lyrics by Lamont & Paris Dozier.
Trivia! Lamont Dozier was a singer, songwriter, and record producer from Detroit. He co-wrote and produced 14 US Billboard number-one hits and four number-ones in the UK, including “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)” and “Stop in the Name of Love.”
